About the Name
Italian words piccoli (small), and libro (book) are a nod to Italian born Dr. Maria Montessori, the inspiration behind each book.
Each book, designed for children ages 0-4, will be made out of durable tyvek to ensure that they last through the drooling, ripping, teething, and tearing phases of early childhood.
Children, especially those in their sensitive period for language (birth-age 6), have a tremendous capacity to absorb vocabulary. In the Montessori environment, we capitalize on that by providing children with the correct terminology.
Pictures of Animals in their Natural Habitat
Sure children may never see a giraffe in the wild, but it's important for them to know that wild animals don't just live in zoos. The beautiful images selected for each book serve as conversation starters for parents and caregivers to talk with, not at, their children.
Font that Models Correct Writing
The font, Futura, was chosen carefully to model correct print handwriting. Some of you may know that in an authentic Montessori environment, we begin by teaching the children (as young as 4) how to write in cursive. When children begin writing in print, we want to make sure to model the correct way of writing an "a" and "g" by showing them books and reading materials that correctly model how to write.
The elephant series in inspired by a child I babysat who was fiercely obsessed with elephants. As I began to look for books and reading material that was age appropriate for him, I was hard pressed to find anything beyond story books about cartoon elephants. This elephant series is dedicated to him.
The 3rd book in our four-book Zoo Series is all about tigers. Other series that are in the works are: City Animals, Real Life Princesses, Long Distance Travel, and more!
